Lets say you may want to vary the diet .
What are safe frogs/toads to feed ?
I thought they were possibly resistant to frog/toad poison ?

I'm not sure on the whole feeding frogs or toads, mine eat either rats or mice.

I have heard of someone trying their hogs on toad (not sure what breed) ... then it wouldn't eat anything else other than toad, would not go back to mice, even ones scented with toad. Could turn out to be a pretty expensive diet!

Of course yours might not do this, but they can be fussy eaters.

Some people do use toads/frogs to scent their mice when their hoggies start being fussy eaters, but I understand it's a last resort sort of thing, as they can decide to only eat the scented ones in future and nothing else. I haven't tried it myself, though.

I read some information about captive hognose snakes dieing prematurely may be attributed
to diet. We all know they eat toads/frogs in the wild and they prefer them in captivity.
So are frogs or toads actually nutritionally more beneficial ?

I think the answer is that we don't know which are the best types of frog/toad to feed. Whatever type hoggies eat in the wild would be the best, I guess, but you have to be sure that you have access to a never-ending supply of them. If you are confident that you can provide toads for your hoggy at every feeding time, then go for it, but if not, it's not worth doing it, for the reasons already stated.

I think most frogs/toads that are native to the USA would work, but they are usually used for scenting mice to try to get western hogs that are not eating to eat.
About the captive hogs dieng prematurely because of diet. It is possible because they might of been fed large mice all of the time. "It is better to feed a western hognose a small mouse 2-3 times a week instead of 1 larger mouse because it is healthier, and then they spend a lot of time digesting the large mouse then most of the weight they gain becomes fat which could lead to liver disease."(www.extremehogs.com caresheet)
Eastern and southern hognoses eat mostly frogs/toads in the wild but can be fed mice in captivity.
I think that if you don't need to feed the snake a frog/toad then don't.

Thank you. I'de like to use the fire belly frogs cause they are cheap and everywhere. I know they are not native & toxic though so not trying it... Plus my girl is eating every week without an issue (cept once but fixed that) so I'll stick with mice. I guess feed more often just less, just like about everything ha :)
