hi, i have a female hognose snake which is about 5 or 6 months now. she ate one small pinkie the first week i bought her but as of then she hasnt eaten a thing! iv tried waxworms, cutting the pinkie into smaller pieces and scenting the pinkie with strong smelling fish, shes been pinkie pressed once as she was loosing weight but i dont want to be resorting to that all the time. just woundering if anyone had any other ideas i could try? thanks :)

I had a female just like this, she was older at about 10 months. She was on fuzzy mice and was told she would take 2 at one sitting. She ate the day after I got her then gave up for about 6 weeks!!
There are lots of things to try though..... Such as, braining?, heating up in really hot water/hairdryer, leaving in a very small tub with the pinkie, scenting with all kinds of things can work such as tuna, sardines, chicken stock to name a few.
In the end with peppa we used sardine. We soaked the pinkie in the spring water and left it in her viv on a bit of kitchen roll with a slice of sardine next to the pinkie and the devil ate it all.
How long has it been since she has eaten? And have you been keeping track of her weight as you said she has lost weight?? also what set up do you have and temperatures? Anything wrong with the husbandry and little hoggy could just be refusing for that reason
If she is losing a fair amount of weight you may have to carry on with assist feeding but unless it's been along time since she's eaten and losing quite a bit of weight would hold off assist feeding and hope she will start when she's ready |

hey there. Did you get her from a breeder? Did she have feeding records with her? Do you know if shes been a fussy eater? Hoggies are known for fussy feeding, mine has just started eating after fasting. I think I read another post of yours about the scales? Possibly could be if there is somethin wrong with the snakes scales etc then this is putting them off eating?
What is your set up like? Temps, housing etc? This will help us have a clearer pic of the situation xx
EDIT: As mentioned before... keep an eye on her weight. If there is no significant weight loss then thats fine. |

hey, yeah she has the correct housing and husbandry set up including temperature etc. shes been off her food for the past 3-4 months. btw this isnt the same hognose as the one that did have the skin problem. iv started giving her waxworms again which have to be forced into her mouth before shell even think about eating them! |

stress will put a snake off feeding, make sure nothing has changed, viv in same please etc, try not assist feeding as this is another stress factor, have u tried feeding in a smaller tub? is the temp inside the viv the same as wot the stat says? if the weight of ur snake isn't dropping considerably i wouldn't be jumping into assist feeding, would look at gettin her seen by a vet incase there is something underlying wrong that is unseen by naked eye.....ie digestive blockage... |

these snakes can be so fussy, try scenting with lizard skin or a frog as this is the hognoses natural prey, the other suggestions will help too but try not to stress out too much and just monitor her weight. There's always people who can help, some reptile shops are good at helping and then if you feel its needed a vet trip might be a good idea just incase there isn't something more serious going on.
I haven't had an issue with Calypso feeding yet but I imagine I will at some point in the future, much like my royals who can be divas and fast for ages - you know your snake better than any of us, as long as the housing, temps is all fine and the weight isn't going down too fast just keep trying every week x |

My hoggies feeding went up and down in September and she also became uninterested in frequest feeds every 4/5 days but now she's feeding well every week taking either 1 or 2 pinkies per feed and now slowly starting to put some weight on but she's still teeny lol |
Ask me and I will tell you |
