Hello everyone, I've only just discovered this forum and I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some advice.
I have a 16-month old male hognose called Baldrick, and I've had him for about a year. He has always been difficult to feed, but it has never really been a cause for concern because he's put weight on steadily and always does eat eventually. However, I'm a bit worried about him at the moment because he hasn't shed for about 3 months. During that time, he has been eating (on and off) but he hasn't grown very much, either lengthwise or in weight. He seems healthy enough but it's difficult to tell with such a small snake.
Does this sound normal or should I be taking Baldrick to the vet? My other snake is a corn who has never caused me any problems at all, so my experience is a bit limited!
Thanks.

from my experience hoggies only shed about 3-4 times a year while they are young and i guess that slows down as there growth slows down. i wouldnt worry about him just yet.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I wasn't sure if it was anything to worry about yet, but it's not easy to find info on hoggies. I do think they're such great snakes and more people should have them - and I'm really glad to have found this forum!

My adult breeding female had once only shed skin 2 times in 1 year.
But she stil eat en grown a lot.

My young hognose baby's shed skin almost every month, but after a few months they shed once in 2 or 3 months.
When the time between shedding skin starts to take much longer, I feed bigger prey.
So maybe try feeding bigger mices'.

Goodluck

I've had Horace a year, and although he has grown by over 6 inches, he has only shed 3 times... must be a hoggie thing

Every time something weird happens with Baldrick, I have to tell myself "It's a hoggy thing!" It's amazing how different he is from my corn snake considering that they're both, you know, snakes and all...

Hello I have a western hognose a little over a year old that usually eats the second i put a pinky or rat pup in. I heard they do not eat much during the winter and mine has not been. He usually stays burrowed and rarely comes out now. I dont know why. Should I keep trying to feed him or no? He got a little skinny and im getting worried any info will help thanks!

Feeding him bigger mice is not the answer, you are not trying to make him shed, it will happen when hes good and ready, i xperienced the same thing, as long as he is feeding thats fine, as hogs are slow growing anyway shedding will not be as frequent as cornsnakes.
