Freddie won't eat the little sod.

Hasn't had a single feed since we've had him, on Friday it'll be 4 weeks.

Tried at all times of the day, tried covering him over like we had to for Toki. Pinkies are defrosted and warmed over a cup of hot water.

It's worrying as he's so small. He comes up to it, rests his head on it, then goes away.

He's from the same breeder as Mia and she's eating like a pro, on large pinkies now.

We've tried rubbing it on his nose - he hisses.
Brained it - he freaks out and tries to get out of the little tub.
Left it with him over night - hated it, woke up to a very annoyed little snake.
Tried using no tweezers incase they were freaking him out - he just won't!

I'm trying not to resort to scenting, I even took him for a little drive which he seemed to quite like (I heard that helps sometimes, somethign to do with the vibrations?). I'll try anything lol.

We went through this with Toki, but Toki was 4 months old when we had him, this guy is a lot younger.

Anyone have any tips until I have to resort to scenting it? I bet he won't take it even then! lol.

Here he was this morning, quite chilled .... until a pinkie a went near him.

Assuming you're setup is good, there's not a lot that we can suggest except just trying regularly. It seems that male hogs are always more finicky for feeding than females.

Have you tried practically ignoring him for a while then offering food?

Thanks for replying #61514;

He’s in a small rub – about the size of a takeaway box that you’d get a chow mein in – bought from a stationary shop though and it’s got plenty of holes drilled into it. He’s got two hides in there and a water bowl. And at the minute he’s on kitchen paper.

His rub is in a large faunarium and over him is an infrared bulb and holder, on a lamp stand. He’s only about 1/3 to ¼ under it and it’s controlled by a habistat thermostat. There’s two digital thermometer probes in either end of his tub and his hot end is 30 and his other end is usually about 24 - 25. The probe for his thermostat is about ¼ in on his warm end.
I’ve blocked his view out on three sides so he doesn’t feel exposed.
It’s hard to describe but the probes seem to say it’s set up OK. I’ll get a photo later if it’s useful.

Yeah we’ve ignored him for a week and a half now, only disturb him to feed or clean up poop – got the pic yesterday when transferring from feeding tub to home tub. We’ll carry on with that until he eats I think, although once he’s in your hand he seems to really calm down and then tries to get of his tub the minute he’s back in it.

I do have a heatmat I could try him on, but I’ve never really had any great success with them. Although I might try switching to that on the weekend and see what happens.

The only thing that works with Bob is pushing the food item against his mouth - but I guess that might make your guy hiss?

It is very frustrating, because everyone seems to find different solutions, and what works on one snake won't always work on another. I know scenting is a last resort, but I wouldn't worry about trying it if your hog starts to lose weight or condition.

We tried the rub on nose thing, he coils and hisses at it then tries to get out. We got Mia eating with the rub against nose thing, she half lick it then be like "oooooh - food!" and snatch it away.

Food just seems to really freak him out.
Although the last time we tried he actually come up to the pinkie and rested his head on it for a few minutes .... we got all hopeful and stayed still .... then after leaving us hanging he decided he'd get scared, hiss again, and zoom off.

Naughty boy!

Try upping the temp to 32c

If I was you now I'd be considering scenting
4 weeks is long for a Diddy hoggie

Any reason you don't really want to sent the pinky ?

Sardine worked for us with our old hog pepper

Thanks! Will do. :)

We just tried giving him only the head incase the size or something was putting him off .... nope.

Will try scenting on Friday. Sardines ... will try that. Do just rub yours in sardine juice or leave it over night with the sardines?

Just didnt want to scent as if there was ever a reason i couldnt get hold of what he likes, I didnt want him to go without, especially if we had him in a routine of sorts.

Just really disheartening as Mia's just took her first two and there's him with nothing ... :(

Fantastic news!!!!! I'm over the moon for you. It's a good start if nothing else.

I have to scent the mice for both of mine. That is how they were fed when they came from the previous owner. I use tinned salmon. I have emptied a tin into a plastic tub and frozen it. When it comes to feeding time I just break a bit off and put it into a tub with the frozen mice and leave them to defrost together. I give the tub a little shake every now and again to mix the salmon up with the mice.

Thanks!

I've got his heat on 32 now so hopefully he'll continue eating ... will try a pinky head again on friday or sat then over the weekend i'll go to lots of shops to find the smallest pinkies in exsistance and try him on one of them next week (if he takes the head that is on friday or saturday).

Ohhhhh OK .... if he won't eat again i'll try that method.

We just had a bit of a shock actually, the pinkie head left a noticable bulge on him ... he must have lost quite a bit. Poor mite.

It may be that his stomach has shrunk and that is why he kept refusing. I had an adult corn that stopped eating for 22 weeks. Somebody suggested offering a much smaller than normal meal so I offered a small instead of the large mouse I usually offered and he ate. Then I gradually increased the sizes again over the next few weeks.

22 weeks?! I'd have lost my mind. How old was your corn?

That's a good point, it probably has shrunk.
That's a very good idea, i'll chop the pinkie up me thinks. Head, with a bit of brain juice flowing ... then the body in two bits. Then offer him it in pieces until he's eating all three bits regularly then i'll try him on a whole one. Oh, and cover him over ...

So fussy lol.

He is 4 years old. He has been a fussy eater since I got him last March but he decided to go on hunger strike, partly down to fussiness, then breeding season madness then I didn't know what it was until it got suggested that his usual food could be too big since it was so long since he had eaten. It worked a treat and he has only refused twice since and that was when he was blue.

Snakes, eh? They like to make us panic. I think it breaks up their days.

I'm glad he's back on track now :). Fingers crossed Freddie keeps it up.

Gonna try Mort - the kingsnake- on a small fuzzy on the weekend and see if he can keep it down.

Thanks for all the advice :)
