I am interested in what the opinion is on suitable ages and sizes to start breeding female westerns when i have bred corns i have normally used the rule of 3 (3 years, 300g, 3 foot long) as a minimum I have 2 07 females and 2 08 i was going to wait till next year before i started breeding the 07s but i have been told that 18 months old is ok with hogs (they are as big as the lads already) i dont want to risk one of the girls being eggbound through breeding too young but do hoggies mature that early appreciate any thoughts |

I don't breed before they hit 300gms, better still 350, my big girl who bred late 08 was a 350 female when put to the male and now after 2 clutches is down to 305 this week, so 3 large mice over 2 days was her dinner this week.
My gravid girl is 390gms and just done her prelay shed and still took 1 large mouse so hopefully by the time she lays she'll put more weight on and cope nicely, she's a smaller girl so 320 is her normal non gravid weight. |

My longest female is 27 inch approx and took 3 x large mice last week but only 1 this, whilst the smaller female is about 22 inches but she will take 2 x large mice if she's hungry but as she's the one gravid 1 is enough. |

The march issue of reptilia 2010 features a breeding article by Brent bumgardner (one of the biggest hognose breeders in the world, and founder of the superconda) he explains that the earliest point a female should breed is 18 months of age and 190g's. Alot of people have different opinions but this is coming from an extremely experienced breeder. My female is 18 months old and 250g's and is now gravid and feeding very well. Your hogs are well upto the job |
