Hi all,
Wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what's our Hoggie.
Toki is 11 months old and has always been the tamest animals i've known. He's been shedding, pooping, eating fine - until last week really.
Last couple of weeks however he's been acting really strange. He's been barracading himself inside his coconut hide and if we go in to change his water or clean his home up a bit, he just leers at us ... mouth wide open, and if you ignore him he makes this weird sort of squeak and deflating kind of noise. After a few days of this we decided to try and get him out to see if we could see anything on him ... he put on his cobra act (which is not normal for him), but the second i touched him he was fine, relaxed, normal. Little bit skittish bit otherwise OK again.
We put him back and heard the squeak again, turned round and he was just opening and shutting his mouth again and again and again, really slowly.
We changed his bedding, cleaned everything. He was fine for a bit ... then he started doing the mouth opening and closing again .... then come this REALLY loud ... er ... fart sort of sound. I checked and there was nothing (no poo etc).
This has been continuous for another week, he refused a feed on the weekend (will try him again tomorrow), but today when we got him out he squeaked a little but was alright. But we noticed he has gone into blue, we give him a soak which he liked, but wehn we got him out the bath, he started to do his open and close mouth thing loads in my OH's hand.
Also when we got him out there was a large pile of slushy brown/reddish stuff by his hide ... i assume poo.
It's all cleaned up and after his soak he seems ok, havent heard any hissing or squeaks.
Any ideas what's guys?

He's just been making squeeky noises and moving round and round his house quite fast, and sort of keeps rubbing and twisting his head against the top of his rub ...
Umph :(
Vet in order tomorrow me thinks! |

Does he seem to do the open mouth gaping while moving his head around a lot as well?? It to me sounds like he's trying to regurge, but if he's not eaten there'll be nothing but water (if he's had much) to regurge.
I do agree that a vet visit would be in order, maybe try to film what he's doing as well to show the vet. |

Thanks for the reply! :)
That pile of brown mush could have been him regurging then, perhaps? He is drinking loads, more than normal, as we rarely catch him drinking.
We are going to take him in on Monday and see what happens. I'll film him when he's out later, he's burrowed himself away now for a rest.
He doesn't really move his head round whilst doing it, it's oddly slow motion, then he'll do it lots and lots on the spot .... then go upright against his rub wall ... open his mouth and rub his open mouth against the top of his rub, whilst wriggling. Then go round and round and round his rub making that deflating/squeak noise. Then if he spots us watching he stops, stares and opens his mouth very wide at us .... then carries on. It's so strange.
Maybe he's hurt his jaw? Something he ate? (he had a rat pup last, he loves them)
I'm just throwing ideas out there lol. I hope this doesnt put him off food :(, he was a bugger when he was little for feeding. |

Hmm, the mention of squeaky noises made me think it might be a respiratory infection, but best see what the vet thinks. Keep us updated anyway - poor little guy! |

Can't you take him for a post-mortem. It might give you piece of mind?

We thought about a postmortem, but we just couldn't do it. His body was in such an odd position when we found him, we though it had been through enough.
He's been buried with his choc orange box and his fave hide.
We've collected some samples that from some red/brown stuff that was near him and on him when we found and him and we'll take that into the vet to get some tests on it.
Our king seems fine, eating, mooching about. So I think our Toki ate something awful ... god knows what though.
Thanks guys. I'll let you know the results.
We're looking at getting another ... hopefully a girl, in the summer. |
