Hello everybody,

We are the new proud owners of a Western Hognose. So far, so good, with just 1 exception - no luck feeding today.

We thawed the frozen mouse for 20 minutes in warm water, and then used tongs to simulate walking the mouse around the terrarium, but our snake was not at all interested.

What did we do wrong? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hognoses can be difficult feeders, especially males - do you know if that's what your snake is? Also, if you've only had him for a short tiem, he might not have settled in yet and therefore won't want to eat.
You could try taking him out of his usual home and putting him in a small box with the mouse, and then leaving him for 20 minutes or so. Sometimes they don't like to have an audience when they're eating!

ok....after i have done this, im gonna show my joy by posting it on the forum.....

Pixie has just eaten!!! after 2 months of trying it has happened but i have to say it was a very slow operation!

see bolow a list of what i tried.

-leaving in a small tub overnight with the pinkie in
-making the pinkie jump like a frog
-brain exposure
-scenting with a TIN of tuna. Notice i said tin.
-Scenting with a slice of REAL UNCOOKED TUNA......And thats the daddy!! Scent with a piece of fine dolphin friendly tuna steak.

I have now kept a small piece of dolphin friendly tuna in the freezer for each feed.

The crazy thing is, everyone says its males that a fussier than females....well my fussy one is female and i also own a male hoggie who is a gannet!!

Obviously, if you havent given your hog a week or 2 to settle in, i would try that then use the tuna.

Good luck and be patient!

Hiya,
I was having a panic, cos mine wasn't eating for well over month. He's now on his third feed.

We hadn't had him long either and he just wouldn't eat, think he needed to settle down etc. He now eats when he's in a separate place, and a slightly warmed up pinkie. (I leave it in a small freezer bag over a cup of hot water). Then i use tongs and nudge him with it and he starts following it slowly ... i pop it by him, cover the tub over and then leave the room. It's not there when I get back lol.
That's what combination works for us so far.

But yeah, yours probably needs to settle in like the others said above me, which i'm guessing is what the problem with ours was for a while.

Good luck! :)
