Hey all,
Freddie's got this weird gap on his belly.
He had this when we had him and it sealed fine - I took some photos of when he was tiny and it just looked like a small indent. Since then it looked like a small scar, the scales looks a bit indented.
We just noticed today it's sort of opened up. There's no fluid and it doesn't seem to be bothering him and he's eating fine, doesn't mind me touching it and having a look .... but it's definitely not normal! It looks like an odd sort of hernia???
Any idea what it is? (Pics below) Vet time?
I thought I should also mention that Mia, our albino hog, had similar on her belly when she was younger. She's fine though.

looks like where the umbilcal chord was attached, would keep dry and on a suitable substrate like kitchen roll nothing thet could rritate it like aspen or anything similar. If it has sealed before this may turn out to be a recurring issue therefore suggest going to a rep vet and get it sorted. |

Hope he gets fixed up OK
It does definitely look like the umbilical has re-opened but I don't know why that might happen. Let us know what the vet says - I hope there's a simple solution either way. |

Thank you.
I hope he's alright too. Fantastic little fella.
He hates having no aspen, really hates it. Constantly trying to burrow and looking really put out. Was sulking under some kitchen roll this morning and yesterday burrowing into my hand as we checked him over lol.
I have no idea what caused it, it's really strange.

Hi all,
Little guy's got a hernia.
Vet won't do anything at this stage, keep him as he is, temps high and on paper and see how he goes. He said this hernia's pretty tricky as his scales are sealed to it, usually they'd just glue the scales over as it's usually just a gap but the seal makes it not a good idea.
Keep his food small so back to two weeny pinkies instead of his large ones. He's gonna get annoyed lol.
No aspen for the little guy, he already looks bored! Gonna have to be creative and make lots of little hides for him I think.
Vet said it should heal over within a few weeks, and definatly improve on next shed.
If not then he'll have to go in and see what more they can do.
He seemed pretty confident that no irritating bedding etc would be the way forward.
He's a good vet, was fab with our beardie (we adopted her with a broken leg) and our cornsnake. |

A snake hernia - I can't say I've ever heard of that before. Did the vet say what might have caused it - is it a weakness in the muscle, or a big growth spurt, or something? One thing's for sure, it can't have been down to heavy lifting... |

He's seen it before. He's south african, worked all over with lots of different species.
I was looking it up online and I can't find much about it to be honest which does make me second guess.
He examined him for ages and he seemed pretty sure that's what it was.
lol, I have an image of Freddie doing weight lift with hides how, just balancing it on his head.
I didn't ask for a cause and he didn't give one, just explained hwo to keep him comfy. If we take him back i'll ask more questions. The gap is closing ... slowly but it's getting better.

Say that ... I do remember him saying something about weak muscles.
Must have been a birth defect. |

It's healing now, slowly but surely, there is some definite improvement :)
He's going to be on kitchen roll for a long long time as a substrate, which is a shame as he loves digging a lot.
Anyone have idea ideas as to what I can put in there when he's fully grown so it won't aggravate any weakness on his belly?
It should heal fine looking at it now, but if it ever opens again he'll be in serious trouble I think, so want to prevent it. |

I keep my snakes on a sort of pulped paper substrate, you can get it in Pets at Home, think it's called Carefresh. It is softer than aspen and it doesn't have any sharp bits in it, so it might be worth a try? |

I will try that substrate, thanks :)
Little guys still on kitchen roll a at the minute.
His hernia's still there bit it's closed a little and has loads more layers of skin over it. Waiting for his next shed to see how he goes then back to the vet for a check up me thinks.
He's perfectly fine in himself, drinking eating fine, curious and active, in the mornings especially. |
