Hi, I am just looking for a bit of advise! I was given my western hognose about two years ago and it did not like to be handled (although I can do minimally when cleaning out etc). It spent the majority of its time burrowing and was rarely seen! I have now moved house and the hognose is behaving completely different, it is constantly above the aspen, it is stretching out along the front, it is stretching up the front of the glass and just always out and about. I am worried that the new location (in a well lit room with more people in and out of the room than previous) is not suitable for it, or that it is too hot?? I do have a heat mat in but at anothers suggestion I have turned this off today incase it is too hot - I do not have a thermometre but am going to go and get one. Either that or before it was too cold in the old house and that this is now better? I just read about them liking to climb and have not had climbing material in before - I wander if it is bored? I do have shelters in the tank for it to go under? Any advise? Thank you! |

hi and welcome along.
Snakes in captivity require hot and cold gradient, therefore heating is required to one of the ends, or your snake cant thermoregulate itself.
You have a mat, so with that you require a thermostat and digital thermometer. You need to give them a gradient from room temp at one end to 31-33 deg Celcius in the warm end. You can ad reptile vines, ropes, plastic plants for them to interact with use for hiding etc.
Have a read at the caresheet here http://www.thehognosesnake.co.uk/hognose_snake_care_sheet.htm and if you have any questions relating to this ask away. |
