hi, i have my kingsnake in a wooden viv with a chip board back, i have stuck the heat mat on there at the moment because its the thinnest part, is this right? it doesnt seem hot enough in there accept right on the part where the heat mat is.

you have the heatmat on the back or base? The heatmat should be in the viv on the base. Heatmats are contact heaters so will only heat whatever its in contact with and not the ambient that much. Have a thin layer of some aspen or whatever substrate you use over the mat and thats it all set.

its on the back at the moment however its on the outside because i've always been lead to believe that heat mats shouldnt be on the inside :/

do you use thermostats with it in side?

mines just plugged in and stuck to the back outside of his viv oppisit his favourite hiding spot, i thought because its infro red heat waves it would warm up the back of the tank and this in front of it? is this wrong.

so many people say different things ><

it should be on the inside of the wooden vivs and outside of glass tanks, Placed on the base of the viv. All heat sources must be statted to prevent overheating even if its on the back of the wood, the heat it can get to can cause potential problems.

It wont do much good on the outside on the side the heat will only really be right on the wood so very little area available for thermoregulation.
