I just fed Vitus, but under the feeding when I was holding the pinky with tweezers he suddenly bit himself! Looked like he bit quite hard, it said a little cracking sound... There's noting to see on him, and now he's just rummaging in his viv... Just chocked me!

Can it be harmful for a hognose to bite himself?

Check out the bite

This happens with some adult females, it's a trait of the species.

Wow, that's just weird Andy G.!!!
Sure there isn't anything wrong with her? Maybe she can't smell?

:) Well, hope she doesn't eat too much crap...

I have one adult female that tries to eat everything...her water dish...blankets if I have her out and she decides they look tasty...the snake hook...whatever is there when she wants to start chewing really...including males...she always eventually figures out that these are not food, though. I have never observed any adverse effects.

Haven't seen anything on him... he acts like his normal self, so no worry... just looked so bizarre ;)

How odd! I would assume they are immune to their own venom, though. It sounds like he didn't break the skin if you can't see any marks on him so probably nothing to worry about.

They are a pretty clumsy species, and they do this sometimes. It is harmless.
