I have a problem with my hognose, he is thrashing around with his mouth wide open and seems to not be in control, this could be a shedding issue as he hasn’t shed for a while,

He has been eating and drinking ok but he has been acting strange for about a month now with no explanation.

I have no idea as to why he might be behaving as he is, I have never come across this behaviour in a reptile before and am very concerned,
Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear that

I apologise for the very late update, unfortunately he was put down at the vets on the 2nd as his condition became worse, a neurological disorder was to blame, and unfortunately nothing could have been done for him.

R.I.P little one.

Have we got an update? I'm worried about the little fella

I hope you've taken Kazerella's advice and got the poor little guy to a vet - have there been any further developments in his situation?
Hoggies can bleed from their mouths as a defensive strategy when they're playing dead, but I'm sure they don't thrash around while they're doing it.
Where did you get him from?

how are you feeding and where?
how long have you had it how long has it been doing this?
is it musking at all?
what does the mouth look like, is it inflame/bleeding?
any signs of RI?
have you been to a vet about it?

would you be ok if i were to post the link onto a forum with a larger community to get a wider range of answers?

Just keep in mind that hognose snakes have the ability to spew blood out of their mouth voluntarily when they are completetely healthy and under stress, so this may not be a reliable indicator of a problem and it could be very difficult to check inside the mouth at all if they keep trying to spew.

has he been fed recently and is this behaviour after a feed?
and if so do you feed in the viv?

has the behaviour persisted since your original post?
Kazerella Posted - 02/03/2010 : 11:20:58
That is quite a distressing video

I think a trip to the vets is in order because behaviour like that could be an indicator of something serious. Hopefully it may just be heat stress, but only a vet could tell you that for sure.

Please keep us informed - I really hope he's alright

That is not a shedding issue. Are you sure there were no temperature spikes? It acts like heat stroke. Some kind of trauma must have occured. Does he act like this non-stop?

This is a video of what he is doing, sorry about the quality.
