Posted - 13/07/2009 : 14:04:43 Facebook don't allow embedding on other websites - best practice on here is to use photobucket. I looked at your hognose on facebook - really nice colours - Do you know what type of hognose it is? looks different to the average western hognoses on here. |

Posted - 13/07/2009 : 10:14:13 Hello Saley - welcome to the forum
Have you got any pictures of your hog? It might help us make a better guess on the age.
Most hoggies can be tempted onto pinkies but it takes a bit of work. I had success by scenting the head of the pinkie with cod liver oil, but I've also placed a frozen pilchard in the bag with the pinkies once and he liked that too. No need to kill frogs really- if you have a good deli near you they might sell frogs legs anyway.
There's a lot of tricks you can try really - Pauline recommends using frog wee if you have a reptile shop near you that's happy to collect some for you. Mandie suggests taking the water bowl out the day before feeding day then soaking the pinkie in water before offering it to the hog. He'll then try and drink the water off the pinkie and end up eating it. Sometimes good old braining works fine too (making a cut in the head of the mouse to expose some brain matter- smells yummy to snakes apparrently )
But... we've noticed that some hoggies just go off food for a while anyway, so it's nothing to really worry about, just keep trying and he'll usually eat when he gets hungry enough. Monitoring the weight of your hoggie is good practice- just so if he loses a considerable amount then you know it might be something more than a general fast. |
