It has been two weeks since my hognose's last feeding and I'm getting concerned. Two days ago I placed the mouse in his cage 4 days ago, and he did not take it. I assumed it was because he just wasn't in the mood and left it alone before trying again today. As for today he has not gone anywhere near the mouse.
Another thing I have noticed is that even when I am not touching him his head will be in his defense mode doing the cobra thing. This is the same for when I attempt to pick him up. My friend can pick him up no problem, thought she has had more experience with picking up snakes than me told me to scoop him near the end gently and I do just that but he gets angry.
Please help me I've had him for almost 4 months. |

Have you tried putting the pinkie in late and night and leaving it overnight?
Only reason I say is that my hoggy seems to prefer eating when no body is about. I can put a pink in and he will appear to ignore it. If I go out for an hour or something when I come back it will be gone. |

Yes, LouiseB once I have him in my hand he no longer does the defensive mechanism.
And to Mamma I am currently in the process of doing the scent trick, I had some extra fabric of a shirt that I carried and placed in his cage. |

2 weeks isn't really a very long time for a hoggy to go without a feed, so I wouldn't worry too much at the moment. Have you weighed him at all recently? I would just keep an eye on his weight and as long as he doesn't lose too much, he will be fine. I have a hoggy currently in his third month of not feeding which he does every year at about this time.
As to the behaviour - he could be feeling grumpy because he's due to shed, or it might just be the time of year. Once you actually have him in your hand, does he stop doing the defensive thing? |

Sorry the post would not let me edit the message so I had to quote. Another thing, can anyone tell me what a hognose goes through before shedding?
It could possibly be that he is due to shed. My one shed in May and then not until October. Mine however went reclusive a couple of weeke before the shed. He went off of his food also.
How long has he been defensive whenever you go near him? You could try the scent trick and this may help him get used to your scent xx (carry a sock on you for 24/48 hrs and pop it in his housing) |
