hello. I really need some help. We rescued an Eastern Hog nosed from a friend. We've had her for about a week and fed her a hopper mouse the other day. Two days later she is SOOOO active. She moved ALL the shavings away from one side of her cage, is trying very hard to climb the sides of the aquarium relentlessly and is hissing and threatening to bite (striking position) when we put our hand in there. What the heck is going on? |

hognose snakes tend to have higher motabolism(spellin?) so is normal for them to be active shortly after a feed. maybe try changing the set up around more hides deeper substrate and things like that. and as kaz say regular handerling. maybe put an item of your clothing in the set up to get them used to your smell. |

Its probably typical hognose behaviour, they are just very active |

Thanks for the response. I will try covering the three sides of the tank. Just for clarity sake, this is the same tank she's lived in for 8 years (my friend just gave us everything). She has two perfect places to hide in as well... one on the warm side and one on the cool side. Do you think she needs to be taken out to be active? I mean, do you think its a good idea to let her explore a bit outside of her tank (supervised?)

My hoggie is one of those that is really quite active most of the time... even for up to two hours or so after feeds on occassions, and he is for ever scaling the walls to see if an exit hole has appeared since last time he looked.
I put this down to him just being a very active and inquisitive snake, and there is plenty of stuff in his tank to make him feel secure, plus two sides are covered with an aquarium picture to add to this.
He is rarely viv defensive, but on the odd occassion he has had a bit of a hissy fit, I have used our snake hook to get him out, and he is absolutely fine once he is out....
Maybe try to make his tank really secure for him by putting in lots of hides etc., and covering two or three of the sides, and then after a week or so of letting him settle to where he is and his new home, use a snake hook to hook him out of his tank, as a lot of hoggies can be viv defensive quite naturally, and some apparently never grow out of the 'showy' stuff, but are fine once in hand.
Its still very early days for him with you.... you may need to give him more time to settle in....

There is a few things it could be, but since you said that you are keeping her in an aquarium I was just wondering if you have 3 sides of tank covered up?
Snakes usually get scared if their tank isn't enclosed enough. She may be acting defensively because she doesn't feel secure.  |
