Hi
would aprreciate any ideas or tips on best
environment for my hoggie. Eg sand soil etc
as I wanna give him the best life possible

if u keeping him on kitchen roll initially then no need to feed outside of viv unless he/she doesn't see the food, our boy is a nungry toad and takes it in his rub, but u wouldn't want to feed on aspen till he more adult as there is more of a risk for ingesting the aspen which cant be digested and will cause a blockage and that kinda goes for sand and things too |

My young ones are on kitchen roll at the minute.
When they get bigger they'll be on aspen.
Saying that, at the mo when I'm cleaning them out I let them have a burrow in a larger tub of shallow aspen and they love it. They burrow for a while then just chill there with their cute little heads poking out. Not together btw, one at a time with clean aspen. Mia would probably eat Freddie, the little piglet that she is.
Make sure they have at least 2 hides, one in hot end, one in cool end.
I've found chocolate orange boxes to be a useful add on, bury it a bit and they explore it. Toki did anyway, it was his favourite thing for a long time, along with his coconut hide.

I like aspen or shredded paper for a substrate. You don't really want soil as it might make your viv too humid, and sand is better for desert species than for hoggies. Whatever you use, remember to feed your hoggy outside the viv so he doesn't swallow any of his substrate along with his mouse. |
