hiya peeps! Another newbie here! Im nicci and i currently own an 09 root beer corn named jynx (amongst many other animals!) and am thinking of getting my first hoggie!  I would very much appreciate any advice and experiences from other hoggie owners as i was yet another victim of pet shop ignorance when i got my corn (the failure to tell me what I REALLY required i.e a thermostat!!!!  ) so would like to be properly prepared for sir hogalot!

I kept mine in 8x4inch braplast tubs until they got a little bigger, they now have a lovely massive (to them) 10x10 inch tub they live in.
With all the decor and extra odds n sods in them they can be hard to find sometimes, but they seem happy in there.
My male I've got was a finicky feeder for about 2 months after I got him as well, seems to be eating brilliantly now.
The female has never turned her nose up at food, if that's even possible for them to do anymore. |

When I got my hoggy baby, I used the same small tank as I'd used for my corn when she was a hatchling, but it was a specialised one that had a removable partition so that you could vary its size. I did make it a bit smaller for my hoggy than I did for my corn.
I moved Baldrick up to a bigger viv when he was about a year old but it will depend on how fast yours grows. On reflection, I would probably have kept him in the smaller one for a bit longer because it made him quite upset and he stopped eating for about 3 months! |

Yeh have read alot about the feeding but it seems that patience and being sneaky pays off! lol the not regretting issue will definately be a problem as will probably end up with snakeys coming out my ears! but hey ho I dont mind one bit!
So would my faunarium that was used by my corn as a hatchie be ok for a while then or perhaps a bit too big? also at what age do you move to the slightly bigger viv?
The more I find out about hoggies the more I want one! |

Hello!
The basics of care for a hoggy are very similar to those for a corn, so you'll already know what you need in terms of set-up. Hoggies are quite a bit smaller, so you won't need such a big viv when he's fully grown. You will also need to set the thermostat at the warm end of the tank a bit warmer than for a corn - maybe 85F.
Boy hogs can be a bit trickier to feed than girl ones, as you will discover if you read some of the threads on this forum, but they are lovely tame snakes with real character. You'll never regret getting one! |
